Database Administrator Job in a reputable IT firm in Lagos


Our client is a reputable IT firm providing a database support to a Telecom giant in Lagos Core/Control Centers.
The major assignment is to handle Call Detail Records(CDRs)- tracking both international roaming and home local registry(HLRs) in line with the Nigeria Communication Commission(NCC)’s standard. It is deploying a world-class database solutions to ensure an efficient data collection and management.


Job Title:  Database Administrator

Job Responsibilities
Your level of responsibility as a Database Administrator II shall involve first moving data to our platform solution and then managing it.
Some work may be pure maintenance while other roles will involve you specializing in database development.
Tasks involve some or all of the following:
• establishing the needs of users and monitoring user access and security on all data centers;
• monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast responses to front-end users;
• mapping out the conceptual design for a planned database;
• considering both back-end organisation of data and front-end accessibility for end-users;
• refining the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model;
• further refining the physical design to meet system storage requirements;
• installing and testing new versions of the DBMS;
• maintaining data standards, including adherence to the Nigerian Communication Commission;
• writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata);
• controlling access permissions and privileges;
• developing, managing and testing back-up and recovery plans;
• ensuring that storage and archiving procedures are functioning correctly;
• capacity planning;
• working closely with IT project managers, database programmers and multimedia programmers;
• communicating regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database integrity and security;
• commissioning and installing new applications and customizing existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose.

Working hours
Working hours are usually from 8 am to 5 pm daily - Monday to Friday and typically include regular unsocial hours. Overnight and weekend work is often necessary as maintenance and development works need to be undertaken during periods of low usage. DBAs are often on call if a critical problem occurs.

Qualifications/Requirements
Interested applicants can enter this career with a:

a.) B.Sc/B.Engineeing/B.Technology degree in any subject but the following may be particularly useful:
• Computer Science;
• Computer / System Engineering
• Computer software/computer systems engineering;
• Physics Electronics;
• Information Technology;

b.) Professional certification is an added advantage. Such include any of these:
i. Oracle Database Certifications(OCA, OCP, OCM),
ii. Microsoft Database Administrator Certification(MSDBA),
iii. MySQL CMA , etc.

c.) Work experience in the related industry also provides added advantage.
