We are recruiting to fill the vacant position below: Job Title: Nutrition in Emergency Specialist - Nigeria Req ID: 19921 Location: Maiduguri (frequent travel to Abuja and Mubi) Type of Role: One year fixed term contract Reports to: Humanitarian Program Manager The Opportunity

  • As Nutrition in Emergencies Specialist you will provide a range of technical support to the Emergency Program team and Country Office in terms of nutrition programing.
  • You will be responsible for the design of nutrition programing component of the humanitarian response in Nigeria and will provide capacity building, technical expertise and oversight to the program, in Adamawa and Borno states.
Responsibilities Will Include
  • Responsible for the day to day management of Nutrition activities for Nigerian response
  • Provide technical support in various components of Nutrition projects implementation
  • Work closely with the Field Coordinator and other project team help in the identification and recruitment of community mobilisers and/or project volunteers (volunteer Lead mothers, care group promoters etc) Provide technical support to Plan staff staff, MoH and other humanitarian actors as necessary to promote consistent good practice
  • Conduct training to build the capacity of staff/volunteers, MoH staff and the community at large
  • Ensure appropriate and consistent education messaging to mothers and other carers at Child Friendly Spaces and in the community
  • Facilitate cross sectoral programming, particularly to promote excellent communication and referral between IYCF CP and emergency relief programming
  • Under the guidance of the Field Coordinator, undertake local level advocacy targeting other humanitarian actors, local authorities, ministries and the military as appropriate, on assessment and appropriate response to support infant and young child feeding
  • At field sites, liaise with other humanitarian actors, local authorities, ministries and the military as appropriate, to maximize collaboration and ensure proper coordination of activities.
  • With support from the Monitoring & Evaluation team support the M & E plan implementation within the Nutrition projects, ensuring this links to reporting requirements.
  • Work closely with partners and their staff to ensure project activities are implemented in time and within the stipulated quality.
  • Ensure project implementation to ensure timely delivery of project activities (for example, monitoring against log frames, individual performance management work plans).
  • Facilitate the development and scheduling of volunteer outreach activities
  • With the Breastfeeding Counsellors and Child Protection staff, develop monthly work plans for the Child Friendly Spaces and mobile units
  • To ensure that the minimum standards of humanitarian relief are maintained in accordance with the Sphere Charter and Red Cross.Code of Conduct.
Do you Have What it takes
  • In order to succeed in this challenging and varied role you will require extensive experience in implementing Infant and Young Child Feeding, Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) treatment, Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) programs
  • BA or equivalent in nursing, nutrition, Biology, social Science, Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or related degree desired
  • Demonstrated experience in capacity building and mentoring of staff
  • Previous experience in emergency preparedness and response
  • Demonstrated understanding of the skills necessary to work with children and particularly vulnerable children
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, think and plan strategically, and communicate with key actors in a dynamic and unpredictable operating environment
  • Excellent community mobilization skills
  • Strong skills in monitoring, evaluation, research and conducting participatory, community-led assessments.
  • Knowledge of Sphere and established international child protection/GBV standards, methodology and tools
  • Experience providing services to children at risk and victims of abuse, exploitation and violence, providing gender-sensitive and child-friendly counselling services, and/or developing/implementing referral pathways for nutrition services
  • Previous experience supervising and managing a team in a cross-cultural setting
  • Knowledge of community mobilization and facilitation techniques
  • Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability and willingness to work in a participatory manner with a diverse range of client communities.
