Abdul Jameel Latif Poverty Action Lab Job for a Consultant (Nigeria Maternal Mortality Research Study)

J-PAL is seeking qualified applicants for a consultancy position with the “Strengthening the Midwife Service Scheme with Community Focused Interventions: Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Field Trial in Nigeria” project.

This project is a randomized controlled trial evaluating several community-based interventions designed to decrease maternal mortality in rural communities in Jigawa State in northern Nigeria. The study is being implemented in 96 communities across the state and involves substantial data collection including household surveys and qualitative data collection. As part of the study, an SMS-based surveillance system has been set up to track births and neonatal and maternal deaths across study communities in real time.

The project is seeking a consultant to join our team for a period to be negotiated, starting as soon as possible. The position will be based in Nigeria and will travel to study sites in Jigawa state. The consultant will oversee the implementation of data collection related to an audit of the SMS based surveillance system. Tasks include training enumerators, developing a feasible work-plan, managing the fieldwork and ensuring deadlines are met, and monitoring and improving data quality. The consultant may also work on other tasks related to the study including overseeing qualitative data collection and verbal autopsies in households that have experienced a death of a woman of reproductive age.
