The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, emergency food security, and water, sanitation and hygiene sectors. The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters, NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours’ notice when a crisis occurs. We are recruiting to fill the position below:     Job Title: Protection Officer Ref. nr.: 4033840998 Location: Maiduguri Project number: NGFM 1902, 1903 Job Type: Full time Reports to: Protection Coordinator Supervision of: Protection Coordinator Travel: 90% travel to field locations in Return, Host and IDP communities Role and Responsibility Generic Responsibilities:

  • Implementation of NRC’s protection policy at the field Promote usage of internal protection SOPs and guidelines
  • Ensure that protection is an integral part of programme activities
  • Together with PC, Support and advise staff on protection mainstreaming
  • Produce data collection, reports and analysis on Protection as required
  • Together with the Protection coordinator represent NRC in field level protection meetings and coordination with relevant partners
  • Promote and share ideas for technical improvement
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Provide day-to-day support to programme and support teams in Return, Host and IDP communities to identify and remediate protection gaps and on a regular basis review NRC Vulnerability and Targeting criteria.
  • Proactively engage with programme teams in the field to ensure protection mainstreaming tools are up to date and relevant to their needs level including designing and implementing the NRC referral pathway
  • Form part of the internal NRC team that will monitor the usage of the NRC beneficiaries’ complaints Mechanism to ensure actions are taken and feedback given to beneficiaries.
  • Together with the PC, Support programme protection mainstreaming initiatives and ensure protection Risk Assessments are core to all NRC’s Multi-sectoral assessment
  • Build strong working relationships with mandated and specialised protection actors
  • Build capacity of NRC programme and support teams on protection safe programing by conducting regular awareness raising sessions, inductions and support Core Protection training follow up.
  • Set up and manage bi-weekly NRC internal Protection working group
  • Support in preparing and compiling relevant reports and analyses

  • The purpose of the Protection Assistant position is to assist in the day to day implementation of protection activities in NRC.
Generic Responsibilities (max 10) These responsibilities shall be the same for all positions with the same title. The responsibilities shall be short and essential. Details belong in the Work- and Professional Development Plan:
  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist with the implementation of the support function portfolio according to plan of action
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function
  • Ensure that procurement, development and distribution of materials and equipment are timely and accordance with the procedures
  • Involve and inform communities and community leaders about the activities
  • Investigate and facilitate introduction of new technology, method and approaches in order to improve the quality of the activities
Specific Responsibilities These responsibilities shall be adapted to the particularities of the job location and context, phase of operation, strategic focus and type of programme intervention. This section shall be revised whenever a new employee is hired or the context changes significantly:
  • Together with Protection Officers, the Assistants will be responsible for the implementation of protection activities on the field - protection analysis, data collection, sensitization and monitoring of protection issues and referrals.
  • Carry out the selection of project beneficiaries
  • Data collection for project monitoring and evaluation.
  • Coordinate the protection activities according to strategy, proposals, budgets and plans
  • Involve and inform communities and community leaders about the activities
  • Build strong working relationships with mandated and specialized protection actors
  • Build capacity of NRC programme and support teams on protection safe programing by conducting regular awareness raising sessions, inductions and support Core Protection training follow up.
  • Facilitate referral of protection issues to relevant service providers.
  • Prepare weekly progress reports and other documents as required
