General Admission Requirements

Postgraduate Diploma

  • All candidates are to have five credit passes including English Language and Mathematics where applicable. 
  • Candidates with Bachelor’s Degree from an approved University must obtain a minimum of pass degree in the relevant programme
  • Holders of HND in relevant programmes from approved institutions with a minimum of Lower Credit may also be considered for admission.

Master’s Degree

  • All candidates are required to possess a Bachelor’s degree obtained from a University approved by Senate and with a grade not less than Second Class Lower Division.
  • A candidate with less than Second Class Lower Division plus a Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum of Upper Credit in a relevant field from a recognized University.
  • In addition to (i) and (ii) above, candidates must satisfy the Ordinary Level requirement of five (5) subjects which must include English Language, Mathematics and any other three (3) subject as may be specified for the programme of choice.

Master of Philosophy

  • A candidate whose weighted coursework average at the Master’s level is between 3.0 to 3.49 CGPA (on 5-point grade average) or between 50% to 54.99%, which includes coursework and Dissertation from a recognized University, may be admitted into the M.Phil degree programme. M.Phil programme runs for four semesters.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree

  • Direct Admission into Direct PhD Programme
    • To be eligible, a candidate must have a relevant Master’s Degree or equivalent from a University approved by Senate and a minimum of weighted average of 60%.
    • In special cases, a programme may require additional conditions including an interview
    • Candidates with M. Phil degree in relevant programmes. Candidates in regular employment or employed at Bowen must indicate such and must submit with their applications, formal letter of release to Postgraduate College.
  • Admission into M.Phil / PhD and Conversion to PhD

    • Provisional admission to a PhD program is granted when the applicant submits a Master’s degree certificate / transcript from an institution whose recognition cannot be adequately determined (typically in the case of a foreign institution), but who otherwise has successfully completed all admission requirements to the PhD programme (as specified above for regular admission). Provisional admission is usually granted for two semesters, at the end of which regular admission status is granted, provided that academic performance meets expected standards. A student can enroll in PhD coursework while under provisional admission.

 

Candidates in regular employment or employed at Bowen must indicate such and must submit with their applications, formal letter of release to Postgraduate College.

Applicants who are not graduates of Bowen University must request their former Universities or institutions to forward directly to the College Administrator, College of Postgraduate Studies, Bowen University their academic transcripts as applicable.
