Action Against Hunger works to save lives by combating hunger and diseases that threaten the lives of vulnerable communities, through nutrition, food security, water and sanitation, health and advocacy. We are recruiting to fill the position below:     Job Title: IYCF Assistant Location: Maiduguri, Borno Starting date: as soon as possible Direct Line Manager: IYCF Officer Objective 1

  • Conduct counselling for pregnant women for the preparation of Breastfeeding and colostrum feeding. One to One tailored IYCF counselling sessions to all mothers with children under 24 months.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Provide the Pregnant women with preparatory counselling for breast feeding and colostrums feeding, to ensure prevention of pre-lacteal feeds and bottle feeding.
  • Counseling the mothers on good maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Provide tailored one to one counseling sessions, based on initial assessments, offering practical advice and education to mothers on the key issues of infant and Young child feeding practices.
  • Ensure all mothers/care givers are aware of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the initial 6 months.
  • Support the mothers suffering from insufficient milk production with advice on re-lactation.
  • Discourage and educate mothers on the dangers of feeding bottles by exchanging used bottles for cups and spoons.
  • Provide mothers with practical advice on correct attachment and positioning when breastfeeding, timely introduction of complementary foods and respond to any concerns or local taboos associated with IYCF.
  • Counseling of mothers on the appropriate time to introduce complementary feeding promotion the continuation of Breast feeding.
  • Educating the mothers on the quality, quantity and frequency of complementary feeds to promote adequate weight gain.
  • Utilize the provided education material on breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices, relaying accurate, practical and specific advice for the mother’s needs.
  • Ensure a comfortable, calm environment for counselling sessions and maintain good relationships with the beneficiaries.
Objective 2
  • Maintenance of IYCF integration within all CMAM components.
Tasks & responsibilities:
  • Ensure strong communication links with all other CMAM staff, providing advice and support to all other staff members on IYCF issues as and when they arise.
  • Conduct education sessions within the surrounding community on the importance of IYCF practices in conjunction with community mobilisers.
  • Aid in establishing mother to mother support groups (Community Health Groups – CHGs) within the community to provide additional support for mothers and extend knowledge of good IYCF practices.
  • Play an active role on advocacy to promote proper IYCF Practices, antenatal and post-natal checkups, importance of institutional deliveries, vaccination and growth monitoring.
Objective 3
  • Integration of IYCF care practices within PHC/MCH component carried out by Ministry of Health Staff
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Coordination with government CVs to incorporate IYCF into regular MCH services;
  • Building effective liaison with government staff and involving them into IYCF care practices even in cooking demonstration (where applicable);
  • Biweekly/monthly meetings with CVs on IYCF related discussion, exchange of lesson learns/challenges/taboos;
  • Documentation of own and CV experiences and challenges under IYCF implementation.
Objective 4
  • Represent AAH and the program within the community.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Know and understand AAH mandate, Humanitarian principals and the current program.
  • With the program manager, develop coherent messages and pass them to the community about AAH mandate, program objectives and approach.
  • Build trust between AAH and the community.
Objective 8 Tasks & responsibilities:

Qualifications

  • Ability and willingness to frequently travel to villages and stay at the field
  • Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions like long distance walking to screening sites

  • Nutrition and Health situation monitoring and mapping of nutrition and health sector activities.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Diagnosis and Mapping
  • Update and maintain 5W/4W mapping (Health, and Nutrition sector) tool on a regular basis for the operational LGA; and share with Nutrition and Health Sector Manager.
  • Update tracking tool to monitor programme screening based data on acute malnutrition; collect health facility based disease surveillance reports and update morbidity reporting tool for assigned health facilities/LGAs.

  • Ensure that specific monitoring finding is reported to the NHSM with potential solutions
  • During supervision visit, identify gaps of in supply sides and report to the NHSM.
  • Work with health workers to establish crowd control mechanisms in the health facilities/centres.
  • Provide guidance and support to health workers for putting in place facility based screening, detection of acutely malnourished children.
  • Closely monitor and provide guidance to project officers for ensuring appropriate measurement techniques, medical diagnosis for defining their health status.

Objective 3
  • Management Functions
Tasks & Responsibilities Potential management functions (not limited to this list only) are:
  • Develop LGA work plan with specific roles and responsibilities for each of the field staff.
  • Identify financial requirements, logistic needs, HR support in reference to work plan and inform the NHSM to prepare budget forecast.
  • Review financial, logistical and HR needs on a monthly & quarterly basis and share with the NHSM.
  • Ensure that all health facilities/sites have adequate supplies to delivery uninterrupted health care services through identifying needs, informing line manager on regular basis.
  • Support the NHSM in organizing LGA based coordination meeting;
  • Prepare individual monthly action plan in reference to work plan and share with the NHSM.
  • Participate in regular monthly planning meeting with nutrition and health teams led by the NHSM.
  • Maintain individual monitoring & supervision plan as well as for the supervisee.
  • Regularly follow up with the teams on the progress of activity, challenges and guide on necessary actions.
  • Facilitate quarterly review meetings/workshops with respective government health managers at State/LGA level.
  • Share training plans with identified needs to the NHSM well in advance to facilitate support from HR/Admin/Logistics.
  • Track Supervisee’s daily attendance and validate monthly attendance for supervisee and submit it on a timely basis to HR.
  • Communicate with HR for necessary staff meeting, performance review, appraisals, and leaves of supervisee.

Objective 4
  • Systematic capacity building of SMOH staff on health service delivery (IMCI, Ante Natal & Post Natal Care, Delivery services) including CMAM and SC management.
Tasks & Responsibilities
  • Support Nutrition and Health Sector Manager in facilitating and organizing technical trainings for health workers.
  • Organize training for Government nurses/midwives on integrated management of childhood illnesses and ANC/PNC and delivery service provision in close collaboration with PM/MPM.
  • Support nutrition and health assistants on developing customized need specific guidance notes on IMCI, ANC/PNC, and delivery service for on job coaching on different modules based on national protocol.
  • Conduct and Support Assistant Nutrition and Health officers to conduct technical on-job coaching of health workers during supportive supervision in health facilities.
  • Ensure use of predefined quality assessment checklist, on-job coaching guidance as well as support Assistant N/H Officers in using these tools.
  • Conduct and Support Assistant Nutrition and Health officers to conduct technical on-job coaching of health workers during supportive supervision in health facilities.
  • Provide technical training and regular guidance to health workers on appropriate stock management and reporting (LMIS).
  • Provide technical training and regular guidance to health workers on disease surveillance reporting, DHIS2 reporting.
Objective 5
  • Information management, Reporting and coordination.
Tasks & Responsibilities
  • Maintain and update database for health workers, community health workers/volunteers, trainings and share with line manager.
  • Prepare consolidated tracking tool for supportive supervision visits/on-job coaching sessions and share with line manager.
  • Update LGA work plans, individual work plans and share with line manager.
  • Use appropriate attendance sheet on-job coaching sessions, workshops/meetings and trainings and share a copy with line manager.
  • Use specific supervision checklist during supervision visits and archive filled supervision checklists with summary report – every month.
  • Fill the Nutrition and Health Evolution reports every month for the LGA and share it with line manager for consolidation.
  • Support government health workers in preparing the integrated diseases surveillance report, monthly facility based DHIS2 report including CMAM.
  • Provide summary analysis from the LGA report including:
    • Significant contextual changes that have impact on nutrition & Health operations.
    • Bullet points on progress of training, on-job coaching and supportive supervision.
    • Key analysis of treatment performances of CMAM.
    • Feedback on quality of service provision through monitoring visits (checklist to be used).
    • Key challenges and proposed solutions.
  • Collect consumption reports from health facilities, compile for LGA and share with line manager with needs for upcoming month.
  • Regularly report and coordinate with line mangers regarding challenges, issues faced in the field for timely and appropriate decision making.
Coordination:
  • Coordinate and collaborate with health State/LGA health offices, health workers for smooth implementation of the project activities and quality of service provision.
  • Organize monthly coordination meeting with health managers and workers.
  • Closely coordinate with WASH team to ensure appropriate WASH facilities in the targeted CMAM sites.
  • Participate in LGA based monthly coordination meetings and support LGA teams on structuring LGA coordination mechanisms with health workers and partners.
  • Participate in meetings with other AAH sector or staffs to discuss and document lessons learned.
  • Assist in organization of project workshop, trainings and seminars, including preparation of short reports.
Objective 6
  • Performance Management.

  • Communicate Action Against Hunger performance standards and expectations to team members which includes: 10 minutes monthly conversation, 3 months/end of probation performance appraisal and annual/ end of contract appraisal.

  • Identify training needs of Health workers and Community Volunteers attached to facilities as well as conducting theoretical trainings if necessary followed by On Job Training (OJT).
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Contact the key nutrition stakeholders and identify training needs in each facility/mobile clinic.
  • Under the responsibility of the nutrition program manager identifies key areas of training for the health and nutrition actors.
  • Conduct training to facilities on IMAM, IYCF, micronutrient supplementation as per the needs identified through capacity assessment.
  • Facilitate on the job training on all aspects of activities as per the proposal and to ensure that the health facility is able to move to the next phases of the project timeline.
  • Work with the health facility in charges, health staffs and CVs attached to the health facility to identify properly and on time when the beneficiaries who must be transferred from the OTP to the stabilization center or any major medical site for treatment and different branches of the programme. Ensure that the transfers are actually well done.
  • Build the capacity of the health staffs and CVs attached to the health facility to perform the appetite test for each potential OTP beneficiary and be sure that after the admission and consecutive visits.
Objective 5
  • Represent AAH and the program within the community.

  • Rapid/detailed assessment of infant and Young Child feeding practices in mothers/care givers at Mobile clinics.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Conduct Simple Rapid Assessment (SRA) of all mothers with children under 24 months that attend the OTP/SFP programme through the local Mobile clinics.
  • Conduct detailed assessment of child feeding practices in women that require additional support or reveal difficulties.
  • Maintain clear communication with all other CMAM programme staff regarding the status of beneficiaries.
Objective 7
  • Participate in regular internal and external coordination for the program at LGA level and at state level when required.
