Child Safeguarding

  • Level 3 - The responsibilities of this post may require the post holder to have regular contact with children and young people. In the overseas context all posts are considered to be level 3.
  • As part of these responsibilities the post holder will support the establishment of child safeguarding systems, promote a culture of keeping children safe, and ensure that potential harm to children (by our own staff and/or as a result of how we do our work) is identified and addressed on an ongoing basis.  The post holder should report and respond to interventions as determined by position related responsibilities identified in the Child Safeguarding Policy.

Introduction

  • Save the Children International is a 'dual mandate' organisation and as such equal priority will be given to both humanitarian and development work. 
  • This is the only way we will be able to ensure that some of the fundamental rights that we believe children have, such as survival, safety and constant access to protection and education can be guaranteed.
  • As part of a commitment to work with children through humanitarian interventions Save the Children will support programmes in both sudden onset and chronic emergency situations.

Role Purpose:

  • To support implementation of FSL component of project. More specifically, assist in the improvement of CTP and livelihoods programs. S/he is principally responsible for the implementation of the Food Security, Livelihoods and CTP related activities.

Main Responsibilities
Programme Support (typically will be at field level):

  • Support field level technical assessments in coordination with the FSL sector lead and other SC thematic areas and/or other external sector agencies, ensuring assessment findings are documented and that all assessments include a specific analysis of children’s needs.
  • With support from the Monitoring & Evaluation team put in place an M & E plan for your project, ensuring this links to reporting requirements, and capacity build technical field staff in carrying out the work.
  • With support from the Accountability lead put in place accountability activities for your project, ensuring that feedback from children and their families is considered in project design.
  • With support from the community mobilization lead ensure effective and efficient information sharing to relevant stakeholders and continuous programme sensitization.
  • Work closely with partners and their staff to ensure project activities are implemented in time and within the stipulated quality.
  • To ensure that the minimum standards of humanitarian relief are maintained in accordance with the Sphere Charter and Red Cross Code of Conduct.
  • With support from the FSL sector lead and/or other senior programme staff, develop project plans and budgets, contributing towards an overall thematic programme plan and master budget.
  • With support from FSL Sector lead and/or other senior programme staff, support fundraising for FSL, including contributing to the development of high-quality concept notes and proposals.
  • Prepare and oversee project implementation to ensure timely delivery of project activities (for example, monitoring against log frames, individual performance management work plans).
  • With support from the FSL Sector Lead and/or other senior programme staff, prepare timely programme and donor reports on project activities in compliance with internal SC requirements and any relevant external donor requirements.
  • With support from the FSL Sector Lead and/or other senior programme staff, with the HR team, identify technical staffing needs for emergency programmes, and support rapid recruitment, induction and training of new staff.
  • With support from the FSL Sector Lead and/or other senior programme staff, identify programme supplies needs and coordinate with the logistics team to put in place a sensible phased procurement plan.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Relevant experience of working in Food Security and livelihoods, including report writing.
  • Education to BSc/BA level in a relevant subject or equivalent field experience
  • Previous experience of program management and implementation
  • Experience of and commitment to working through systems of community participation and accountability
  • Excellent communication and strong influencing skills
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • A high level of written and spoken English
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of SC. In particular, a good understanding of the SC mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support
  • Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience of training and capacity building staff
  • Some experience of representation and ability to represent SC effectively in external forums.
  • Knowledge of institutional donors and experience of developing proposals
  • Ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports

Capacity Building:

  • Identify learning and training opportunities for partner staff and communicate this to the FSL Sector Lead.

Representation & Advocacy & Organisational Learning:

  • Ensure that Save the Children's work is coordinated with efforts of other agencies and Government, and support Interagency Coordination forums, advocating for the specific needs of children. This may involve supporting coordination working groups within the IDP camps and host communities or target project sites.
  • Contribute to communications and media work as required through correction of data and information and sharing with the project heads
