Givon Petroleum is scam!!! Read my Analysis.

Job scams are not new in Nigeria. There are lots of malicious individuals out there who setup various avenues like fake companies, fake recruitment exercises just to exploit gullible job seekers.

Today, a job seeker on my BBM list pinged to ask me if I have any idea about Givon Petroleum. They sent her an SMS inviting her for an aptitude test.  I quickly cranked up my web browser and looked it up. As the website loaded, I made some observations.

It's actually a blog running on blogger (this might sound a bit technical for some people).
The pictures on the website of a supposed international oil and gas company are the crappiest pictures I've ever seen in the history of the internet.
The website content is nothing to write home about. In fact everything about Givon Petroleum was unprofessional and tacky.

On their Career Page, I observed the job vacancies which were apparently posted sometime ago. This, on its own looked suspicious to me.

Finally, I jumped to the Shortlisted Page which is a page she was asked to visit via the SMS sent to her. After going through the page, my questions are as follows:

My Questions:

  1. Why is there no location for the aptitude test?
  2. " The RECRUIT CARD". Wow. Nice concept!! But please what is that?
  3. Why cant I get the Recruit Card at the Bank after making payment?
  4. Why must I wait for their "Postal agent" to deliver it to me.
  5. By the way, you'll notice that that page is supposed to be the content of a mail sent only to shortlisted candidates. Why was it not sent? Why put it up online for everyone to see?
  6. Why is the whole page centered on payment payment payment payment? Haba!!!

Alright let me help you answer the above questions

My Answers
  1. There is no location because no aptitude test will hold anywhere!
  2. I really like the concept of a "Recruit Card". It kinda sounds like some magic card that will change the face of recruitment and employment in Nigeria forever. Duuhhh! There's no such thing as a Recruit card by Givon Oil. If you are tech-savvy you'll notice that the recruit card written on the image of the card on their website was photo-shopped!
  3. Get the card at the bank after payment? Get what card? It does not exist. They simply want you to pay, go home, lay back on your couch, sip a cup of zobo and wait for their postal agent to deliver the golden card, perhaps in 2090 when most of us have probably left the surface of the earth.
  4. You have to wait for the postal agent to deliver your recruit card because Givon oil needs time and room to shut down their fake recruitment processes and vanish from the surface of the earth.
  5. A shortlisted email couldn't be sent to the thousands of applicants because bulk emails are far costlier than bulk SMS on the internet. Givon Petroleum simply couldn't afford it. And of course they do not have the supernatural powers to send it one at a time to the thousands of applicants. The best option they could come up with was to paste the composed email on their website (blog) and give a red warning informing us that it is only for shortlisted candidates knowing fully well that desperate job seekers could pay, whether they were shortlisted or not. Smart move.
  6. They entire page is centered on payment because man must eat. Unemployment rate in Nigeria is really very high and some people are taking advantage of it. The owners of "Givon Petroleum" need money ooooooo. Abegi.

Conclusion
Ignore any employer who asks you to pay money for employment. This seems to be the booming business in Nigeria today. Every now and then i get complaints from job seekers on this but I've never really had the time to make a post such as this on it. I guess I was pushed to make this post in order to enlighten potential preys out there. I hear people say they were duped of 2k, 10k, 35k, 70k and even as high as 250k just to get a job. SMH.

A real employer only needs you to fill a position, add value to his organization and he pays you in turn and not to extort money from you.

My brothers and sisters, if  anybody mentions 1 Naira to you in the name of employment, run!

This is Nigeria. Boys are not smiling. Shine your eyes well well o.
