WASH Officer at Malteser International

Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno State, MI is currently active in the WASH and Protection sector for improving the lives of both the IDP population as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. They include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. Malteser International thereby applies a participatory, gender sensitive and inclusive approach.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

 



Job Title: WASH Officer

Location: Yola, Adamawa
Employment Type: Full-time
Start date: July 2023 subject to availability of funding
Duty Station: Yola (with expected travel across areas of project implementation in Adamawa)
Duration of contract: 3 months with possibility of extension

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensure the timely and effective implementation of activities under his/her supervision in the specific deep-field locations (daily coordination of activities, BoQs, procurement requests, financial requests)
  • Based on project documentation, develop, and submit to the supervisor the monthly activity planning in coordination with contractor’s teams from the specific deep field location.
  • Develop and submit to the supervisor the monthly staff movement plan and coordinate respective staff movement requests.
  • Provide his/her supervisor with regular updates on procurement needs and supporting documents for the request to the Logistics Department in the country office Maiduguri.
  • Develop and submit advance requests related to the activities in the specific location and ensure timely clearance of advances in close coordination with the Finance Department in the Country Office Maiduguri.
  • Monitor the security situation and report any security or safety-issues to the Security Department in the Country Office Maiduguri.
  • Designs training modules for local leaders and contributes to the improvement of the existing ones in close coordination with the HR department in the Country Office Maiduguri.
  • Ensure that water and sanitation activities are implemented in a timely and professional manner and in line with the needs of beneficiaries.
  • Maintain a close link and collaborate with implementations partners other sectors in particular area
  • Manage partner implementation and teams of contractors (coordination and implementation of daily tasks, support in performance review by the Area Coordinator, participation in field staff meetings) and ensure the teams understand and use all relevant MI protocols.
  • Ensure the daily supervision of contractors, partners, regularly assess the quality of their work by ensuring their suitability with MI technical prescriptions.
  • Help team members to identify their needs in capacity building and share with the supervisor in close coordination with the HR department in the Country Office Maiduguri.
  • Ensure the contractor’s teams and partners act in line with MI internal policies, more specifically CoC and PSEAH policy in close coordination with the HR department in the Country Office Maiduguri.
  • Ensuring the operationalization and monitoring of the partner’s activities
  • Where applicable, regularly update the Security Department on the security situation in the respective deep-field location and contribute actively to MI’s “duty of care” in close coordination with the Safety and Security department in the Country Office Maiduguri.
  • Monitor gaps and humanitarian needs of targeted population and update the Supervisor regularly.
  • If requested, contribute to preparation and designing of project proposal for different donors in line with the management’s strategy.
  • Support with MEAL to effectively monitoring and reporting of the activities and expected results (relevant data collection and documentation, internal activity reporting).
  • Support the Area Coordinator in coordination between deep field locations and country office in Maiduguri (including regular communication with the supervisor)

Required Qualifications, Competencies, Knowledge, and Experience

  • First Degree in Engineering, Geology, Geography or other WASH-related fields from a recognized/accredited Tertiary Institution in Nigeria
  • Ability to work within a team setting
  • Independence, adaptability and flexibility with good workload management, multitasking and ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills
  • An advanced degree will be an added advantage
  • At least 3 years post NYSC relevant experience in NGO sector
  • Previous experience with other local and international NGOs
  • Training and experience in borehole and VIP latrine construction/rehabilitation
  • Community mobilization and advocacy experience
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
  • Fluency in English and Hausa spoken and written
  • Ability to work in partnership with government and other NGO staff
  • Good interpersonal skills
