Job Title: Chief Risk Officer (CRO)

Location: Abuja
Employment Type: Full-time, Immediate Appointment
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer with a direct reporting line to the Board Risk Committee

The Opportunity

  • We are now seeking a visionary Chief Risk Officer to join our executive leadership team immediately, to champion our Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework and guide our organization through a dynamic risk landscape.
  • This is a strategic, board-level role for an enterprise risk leader. As our first CRO or successor to the function, you will architect and own the holistic risk strategy.
  • You will move beyond siloed compliance to an integrated view of strategic, operational, financial, and insurance risks.
  • You will empower the organization to take informed risks, ensuring resilience and capital efficiency while safeguarding our reputation and balance sheet.

Key Responsibilities

  • ERM Framework Leadership: Design, implement, and mature the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework aligned with industry standards (e.g., COSO, ISO 31000) and regulatory guidance (e.g., NAIC ORSA).
  • Risk Governance:Provide expert oversight and reporting to the Manageing Director and the Board Risk Committee on the company’s risk profile, appetite, and emerging threats.
  • Holistic Risk Oversight: Provide aggregated oversight of:
  • Insurance Risk: (Underwriting, Reserving, Accumulation)
  • Financial Risk: (Credit, Market, Liquidity)
  • Strategic & Operational Risk: (Cyber, Third-Party, Business Continuity, Compliance)
  • Capital Management: Collaborate closely with the CFO and Actuarial functions to ensure risk insights drive capital modeling (e.g., Economic Capital, RBC) and the Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) process.
  • Culture & Capability: Foster a strong, proactive risk culture throughout the organization. Build and lead a high-performing enterprise risk team.
  • Strategic Partnership: Act as a strategic advisor to the CEO, CFO, and business unit leaders, integrating risk insights into strategic planning, capital allocation, M&A, product development, and underwriting strategy.
  • Risk Appetite & Limits: Define, calibrate, and monitor the company’s Risk Appetite Statement. Establish and enforce risk limits across all risk categories.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Business, or a related quantitative field. An advanced degree (e.g., MBA, CFA, FRM) is strongly preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive experience in risk management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (Deputy CRO, Head of ERM) within a general or life insurance company.
  • Proven ability to translate complex risk data into strategic insights for executive and board-level decision-making.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in building and implementing an ERM framework, including Risk Appetite, ORSA, and stress testing/scenario analysis.
  • Deep technical knowledge of insurance risk, capital models (e.g., Moody’s AXIS, Igloo), and relevant regulations (NAIC, Solvency II principles).

Highly Desirable:

  • Professional designations such as Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA), Financial Risk Manager (FRM), or Professional Risk Manager (PRM) 
  • Experience in a rated carrier or reinsurance environment.
  • Background encompassing both quantitative (actuarial/reserving) and qualitative (operational/strategic) risk disciplines.
