Job Title: Laboratory Technologist (Technician)

Context

  • Under the direct administrative supervision of the National Medical Officer and technical supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, the incumbent will be responsible for technical and operation support to laboratory services with respect to International Humanitarian Community (IHC) Isolation and Treatment Centre in Maiduguri, Nigeria.

Core Functions / Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory procedures as assigned by the laboratory supervisor for pre-examination, examination and post-examination activities through the use of the standard relevant equipment.
  • Ensure standards and the quality of laboratory procedures by strictly following the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Adhere to biosafety measures adopted in the laboratory, minding the safety of oneself and others.
  • Organize and operate activities on assigned station for accurate, efficient and timely delivery of results.
  • Perform quality control activities for assigned stations and document results as required.
  • Facilitate in maintenance of laboratory equipment in good working order and operate equipment appropriately following SOPs.
  • Facilitate in laboratory stock management and monitor that the equipment and consumables are sufficient for the anticipated work.
  • Facilitate to maintenance of established system of organized record keeping and information management for timely delivery of results, data collection, analysis and reporting for laboratory monitoring and facilitation to operational research.
  • Participate in the development and updating of SOPs as needed.
  • Participate in the improvement of the service system according to adopted work plan in the laboratory.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Completed Bachelor's degree or Diploma from an accredited academic institution in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Sciences, Microbiology or a related discipline.
  • At least two years of relevant laboratory experience in a busy institution, preferably in a laboratory.
  • Relevant technical knowledge and practices to personnel and laboratory operations.
  • Computer literate with understanding of accurate data collection and analysis for monitoring and continuous improvement of laboratory services and performance; and,
  • Good awareness of the laboratory role in health systems, optimal use of resources for quality and efficient services delivery.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and working knowledge the local language Hausa / Kanuri.

Context

  • Working under the overall supervision of the Procurement & Logistics Officer and the direct supervision of the Procurement and Logistics Assistant, the successful candidate will be responsible for completing standard driving and logistics supporting activities in line with IOM’s rules and regulations. He/she will carry out the following duties and responsibilities:

Core Functions / Responsibilities

  • Provide transport support services to IOM Staff using official vehicle(s) in relation to the implementation of project activities).
  • Manage the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle to ensure roadworthiness of the vehicles. This includes daily check of tires, brakes, engine oil, fan belt, keeping vehicle clean both inside and outside, etc.
  • Arrange for minor repairs and ensure upkeep of official vehicle(s).
  • Keep record of spare parts for the vehicle and conduct monthly inventory of the spare parts.
  • Ensure that the vehicles undertake regular service intervals.
  • Make sure that the vehicle always has full tank prior to departure for field trips.
  • Find the efficient routing over the best available roads to the destination.
  • Ensure that the IOM vehicle(s) is used only for official/authorized business, as advised by the supervisor.
  • Make sure that the daily log sheet is prepared, and a monthly report is prepared summarizing statistics linked to mileage, fuel consumption etc. for the vehicle.
  • Ensure communication equipment in the vehicle are functioning properly and perform frequent radio checks with UN security office as well as radio the base for every vehicle movement (arrival & departure points).
  • Keep a high degree of confidentiality and discreteness in discussions, which involves IOM and its officials.
  • Take proper measures to reduce potential security threats to IOM officials or property within the immediate vicinity of the vehicle and along transport routes.
  • Collect and delivers mails/documents as assigned.
  • Ensure that the steps required by the local rules and regulations (pertaining to driving) are taken in case of involvement in accident.
  • Assist in moving, relocation and general arrangements of office and shelter furniture and items.
  • Record incoming and outgoing correspondence in the mail register.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Certificate/Diploma/Degree in related field.
  • Professional license in driving; two years of relevant experience in driving required.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and Native Language; Fluency in multiple languages advantageous.
