Job Title: Desktop Publisher

Overview & Organisation

Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.
  • In seeking to achieve these objectives, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the implementation of new organization structure and the filling of regular and short-term vacant posts.
  • The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the regular post of Desktop Publisher in the Directorate of Conference Management and Publications, Printing Unit of the African Union Commission.

Project

  • Produce final page layouts of documents intended for electronic or printed publications. Typeset AU Publications and other materials in Arabic, English, French and Portuguese.
  • Ensure that proof-read or amended drafts are corrected and final version produced in conformity to the AU standards.
  • Find and edit graphics, such as photographs or illustrations as well as collate and check documents to ensure that all elements are included.

Task
Under the overall supervision of the Director of Conference Management and Publications and direct supervision of the Senior Publishing & Reproduction Officer, the incumbent is required to perform the following tasks:

  • Produce page layouts of documents for electronic or printed Publishing
  • Execute typographical composition using different types of softwares (Adobe Creative Suite, Corel, Page maker and Quark XPress; etc…)
  • Format and convert document from one type to another, prepare camera-ready / copy of AU Publications and non-publications jobs;
  • Keep records of jobs completed on daily basis and passes to pre-press Supervisor for print processing;
  • Ensure confidentiality of all documents where appropriate;
  • Advice on quality-control in production of documents / publications;
  • Operate and maintain clean Desktop Publishing equipment;
  • Carry out any other duties that may be assigned by the overall / immidiate supervisor.

Qualification and Work Experience
Qualifications:

  • The incumbent must have a Diploma in Graphic Art, Graphic Design, Graphic Communications, Desktop Publishing, Graphic Multimedia
  • Certificate on Adobe Creative Cloud Suite is an advantage.

Professional experience required:

  • At least 2 years of experience in the field for diploma holders or 5 years experience in the field for holders of certificate in Desktop Publishing.
  • Experience with publication practices in printing industry is desirable.

Tenure of Appointment:

  • The appointment will be made on a regular contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve (12) months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

Job Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Publication Officer and overall supervision by the Director of Conference Management and Publications, the responsibilities and duties of the incumbent shall include the following:

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create visual concepts, using computer softwares (Adobe Packages), to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate clients.
  • Develop the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.
  • Up to date with industry leading software and technologies (In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Take pictures or film objects using a blend of technical skills and artistic.
  • Understand and interprete clients need.
  • Advise clients on strategies to reach a particular audience.
  • Ability to interact, communicate and manage in presenting ideas in visual format.
  • In doing this, the interpreter shall:
  • Help develop Logos when required;
  • Create manuals and tutorial video when required.
  • Perform other related duties that may be assigned by the Director, or immediate supervisor.

Requirements
Educational Qualifications & Work Experience:

  • Candidates must have a Certificate in Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop from a recognized school.
  • A Certificate or Diploma in the field of management will be an added advantage.
  • Candidate should have at least Four (4) years of continuous working experience in developing layout and production design with AU, UN and other international organizations.

Tasks

  • Type and proof read documents, reports, correspondences, messages, queries, etc. as may be required by assigned supervisors;
  • Draft responses to routine correspondences for the signature of the supervisors;
  • Receive guests / visitors / staff and provide them with basic information on relevant Issues and procedures;
  • Maintain a proper filing and recording system for all incoming and outgoing correspondes and documents;
  • Answer and screen telephone calls / E-mail messages and ensure follow up with supervisors and partners;
  • Keep an up to date diary of appointments for supervisors and other senior staff of the division;
  • Keep equipment in use in good condition and report on defects for maintenance and other necessary action;
  • Provide day to day routine administrative supports to various work units of the assigned Department / Division / Units

Job Requirement
Educational Qualification and Work Experience Required:

  • A minimum of Diploma in Secretarial since plus A higher qualification will be an added advantage;
  • Typing Speed: 50 words per minutes
  • Excellent secretarial and office management skills;
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant secretarial experience in a Government, public sector or international organisation.

Job Purpose

  • Under the direct supervision of the Director, AU-IBAR, the Senior Policy Officer Economics, Trade and Marketing will contribute and provide technical advice for AU- IBAR’s annual / periodic reports/publications; and, as a member or leader of multidisciplinary teams, contribute to the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of livestock development projects and programmes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support to AU-IBAR technical units for integration of socio-economic analyses into animal health and, animal production support interventions.
  • Technically support AU-IBAR on matters related to the trade and marketing of animals and animal products
  • Undertake economic analyses of actors/issues and trends that impact on the development and utilization of animal resources in Africa.
  • Provide technical back-stopping and guidance to relevant personnel in the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and AU Member States in the economic analyses of regional trends in the production, processing, consumption and trade of animals and animal products.
  • Collate, analyse and synthesize -economic, trade and marketing data and information to support the development of evidence based policies to promote growth of the animal resources sector and its contribution to economic development.
  • Provide support for the implementation of the policy and capacity development initiatives at AU-IBAR.
  • Represent AU-IBAR in regional and continental livestock socio-economic networks and related fora
  • Contribute to the preparation and execution of AU-IBAR’s annual, quarterly and monthly work programmes and prepare progress reports on the socio-economic components in accordance with reporting guidelines provided by the African Union Commission and the Director AU-IBAR.
  • Organise and supervise the implementation of socio-economic activities in line with AU-IBAR’s annual work program;
  • Provide support in other areas of AU-BAR’s work and undertake any other duties as maybe assigned by the Director of AU-IBAR.

Qualification and Work Experience Requirements
Educational Qualification Requirements:

  • A Master's Degree in Agricultural Economics preferably in Livestock economics with 7 years of work experience managing a livestock economics , trade and marketing portfolio
  • A higher qualification will be an added advantage OR
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Economics preferably in Livestock economics economics with 10 years of work experience managing a livestock economics , trade and marketing portfolio

Additional Work Experience:

  • At least three (3) years of work experince in livestock economics in an international organisation.
  • Proven skills / publication record in areas related to trade modelling, market intelligence and using tools to monitor investments in the livestock sector

Function Skills:

  • Ability to identify key strategic issues, opportunities and risks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly links between the Organization’s strategy and the work unit’s goals.
  • Ability to provide innovative technical leadership by performing and/or overseeing the planning, development, and management of operation.
