It is the only company that does Total Beverage Alcohol (TBA) in Nigeria. It’s an on trade dominated market but with a fast growing off trade channel.

Job Title: Brewing Manager

Location: Ogba, Lagos
Employment Type: Full-time

Context / Scope

  • Nigeria is currently the world's third largest market for the Guinness Brand. The Lagos Brewery produces c.1.5 million hectolitres of various Guinness products per annum, with an asset base worth in excess of N12.5 billion.
  • The site has a current establishment of around 224 permanent staff and various supporting contractors.
  • The products are made for the local, national and export markets.
  • The Brewing Department is responsible for the conversion of raw materials into finished liquid products, ready for Packaging. The Brewing Manager is the head of the brewing department with the greatest single responsibility in terms of both head-count and assets in Brewing.
  • The incumbent oversees all brewing activities through their associates, and reports to the Brewery Manager.
  • The incumbent is responsible for meeting sales demand and delivering/meeting stretching targets in a cost efficient manner. The Brewing Manager is also responsible for the entrenchment of WCM practices in a safe and healthy working environment.

Role Metrics
Financial (max 2 lines):

  • Responsible for the brewing of c. 1.5million hl of product (FES, Harp, Malta and Gordon’s Spark) from raw materials with an annual value of N700 Million, ready for packaging at an annual value of over N1.6 Billion.
  • Fixed cost budget is c. N600 million per year + variable cost. Assets worth c. N2.8 billion.

Complexity (2-3):

  • The Nigerian beer market is very complex with many competitors and a strong quality, cost and delivery focus.
  • Need to constantly reduce production cost, while maintaining high quality and delivery in a highly unionised working environment.

Leadership Responsibilities (2-3):

  • Manages, coaches and supports 8 management staff and c.80 non-management staff including contractors.
  • Continual interaction with Packaging (as the key internal customer), Engineering, Supply Planning, other Breweries and the Supply Leadership Team, to ensure that target volumes are achieved cost effectively on time.

Purpose of Role

  • To deliver, through management of personnel and assets, quality products for packaging, while achieving or exceeding the business targets for Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety and Morale (QCDSM), as defined in the annual operating plan (AOP).

Key Decision:

  • Required manning in the department to successfully deliver AOP
  • Changes on capability spread by section across the dept and training requirement to drive skills flexibility and upgrade for employees within the department.
  • Adherence to leave plans & executions for seamless production through the year.
  • Any issues on employee unrest and industrial issues as concerns the department / site.
  • Waste reduction across e-t-e brewing production process.
  • Needful plant / process change to deliver cost effective liquid processing at desired BTM quality standards aligned with Diageo way of brewing.
  • Any issues on safety of employees, plants and good product quality to sustain improved performance

Top Accountabilities

  • Ensure that all products required are produced to target volumes and specifications with best possible efficiencies and optimum KPI’s.
  • Control cost of operation by minimising process waste, maximising extract levels and taking appropriate actions to reduce monthly expenses on fixed and variable costs.
  • Define and manage personnel, revenue and capital costs for the department well within budget
  • Ensure alignment of situational, systemic and strategic activities through formal Level 2 and Level 3 reviews.
  • Enforce the company’s standards of health, safety and environmental practices; the protection of personnel in brewing as well as the protection of the company assets.
  • Stakeholder management within cross functional teams to deliver on departmental commitments and overall site strategy.
  • Full ownership of the production plans to deliver the AOP volumes.
  • Deliver on all liquid innovation and renovation plans as initiated by the technical team.
  • Partake in research and development activities of the company by implementing production trials.
  • Ensure, through regular liaison with Quality Assurance, that set quality standards are achieved and exceeded.
  • Define and implement departmental strategy, aligned to PPMS and ITFs to drive brewing performance and efficiencies.
  • Produce aligned Team and individual goals & development plans to drive capability and enforce accountability and ensure that these are delivered upon.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Honours Degree in Physical / Biological Science or Chemical Engineering
  • Should hold IBG qualification, preferably to Diploma level, have a detailed knowledge of brewing processes and be in touch with developments in Brewing Best Practice.
  • Strong management and coaching skills, and able to apply principles of change management
  • Strong ability to manage budgets and costs – able to analyse financial and technical data as required and take the necessary consequential steps in his span of control.
  • Be skilled in the normal business software tools of the modern working environment.
  • Minimum of Seven years experience in Brewing or Manufacturing
  • Knowledge of ISO 9000 and 14000 policies and procedures, site HR policies and procedures, site HSE policies and procedures
