Head of Health, Safety and Environment at Benin Electricity Distribution Plc (BEDC)

Benin Electricity Distribution Plc (BEDC) is one of the successor distribution companies (Discos) created following the unbundling and privatization of the state-owned Power Utility, Power Holding Company of Nigeria Plc. BEDC is responsible for the retail distribution of electricity in Delta, Edo, Ekiti, and Ondo States with a geographical coverage of 57,353 square kilometres. The company operates from twenty-seven (27) business districts with approximately 350 offices located across four (4) states with about 18 million people, about 4 million households, and an effective customer population of 1,291,181 as of September 2023.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Head of Health, Safety and Environment

Location: Edo

Responsibilities

• Manage and drive the implementation of the HSE strategy.
• Ensure that the workplace is monitored and is fully in compliance with all applicable safety standards, rules and regulations.
• Use labels, signs, posters, floor marking, and color coding to warn employees about potential hazards.
• Ensure that Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are maintained and communicated to employees.
• Ensure the results of safety inspections are documented; monitoring the investigation of accidents and injuries; ensuring that corrective actions are taken; and providing recommendations for ways to prevent similar accidents.
• To highlight areas where training/certification is required to meet the standards imposed by Legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, or HSE guidance.
• Keep up to date with changes in current legislation and bring to the attention of the Management any relevant new legislation.
• Ensure that all necessary reviews, as directed by regulatory authorities, are appropriately implemented
• Recommend control measures and advise on the standard of PPE issued to employees.
• Conduct health and safety inspections and prepare reports of all the company’s operations.
• Carry out investigations into all accidents and near-miss incidents and to record the findings on the relevant forms.
• Ensure that all accident reports are recorded in a timely, complete, and accurate manner.
• To bring company-related health and safety matters to the attention of the management at regular intervals.
• Ensure that an adequate programme of training for health and safety is established and that the safety culture is encouraged amongst employees.
• Perform any other duty that may be assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum of 10 years of work experience in the power distribution sub-sector or other related experience in the power industry
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications.
• Advanced troubleshooting and multi-tasking skills.
• Membership of ISPON is compulsory. Other professional certifications are an added advantage.
• Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
