Job Title: Mobile Harbour Crane (MHC) Operator

Purpose of the Role

  • The Mobile Harbour Crane (MHC) Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of mobile harbour cranes to load and discharge containers from vessels, terminal trucks, and the yard. Containers vary in size (20ft–40ft) and may be either empty or fully loaded.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Responsibilities:

  • Operate Mobile Harbour Cranes, quay cranes, and vessel cranes for loading and unloading containers from vessels.
  • Follow all operational and safety procedures to prevent injury or damage to personnel, cargo, equipment, or property.
  • Ensure tasks are performed efficiently and productively to maintain operational flow.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
  • Act as Foreman/Signalman under Hook when not operating MHCs.
  • Conduct pre‑shift inspections to ensure all crane systems and components are functioning properly.
  • Identify and report any malfunction, safety hazard, or damage before, during, or after the shift.

Reporting & Scope:

  • No direct or indirect reports.
  • Reports directly to the Vessel Supervisor.
  • Scope of work is domestic.

Work / Business Contacts:

  • Internal: Planning, Technical, Safety & Security departments.
  • External: Vessel agents and customers, as required.

Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Education:

  • Minimum of an SSCE / WAEC qualification.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in equipment operation within a terminal or similar industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding of container terminal operations: vessel logistics, hazardous cargo, break‑bulk, and special cargo handling.
  • Familiarity with international safety standards and strict compliance with safe working practices.
  • Prior experience operating reach stackers or empty handlers considered a natural progression.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Excellent hand‑eye coordination and depth perception.
  • Experience in multicultural work environments is an advantage.
  • Valid driving licence.
  • Clean safety record with no previous breaches or warnings.
  • Ability to work at heights; no acrophobia (fear of heights).
  • Basic proficiency in English (oral and written) and working knowledge of Pidgin English.
