Vacancy For WASH Coordinator at The International Medical Corps

  • The WASH Coordinator will also strengthen networks with key WASH stakeholders in Borno state, including but not limited to, Ministry of Water Resources, UNICEF, RUWASSA, NEMA and SEMA.
  • The WASH Coordinator will provide support in assessing WASH needs in newly accessible areas in Borno State and recommend possible WASH intervention in these areas.
  • The main purpose of this position is to lead technical implementation of WASH programming in target communities/LGAs in Borno State, and to identify and help address WASH technical skills gaps in national program staff.
  • IMC recently secured funding for an emergency WASH GBV, and nutrition program targeting IDPs in IDP camps in Borno State, North East Nigeria.
  • The WASH Coordinator’s support will mainly consist of providing technical guidance for the WASH program team, being an active member of the WASH Cluster, and also providing assistance to the Emergency Program Coordinator in the recruitment and coaching of a national WASH Program Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide technical guidance to the WASH team to ensure WASH project targets are met within the required timelines
  • Act as the lead on WASH assessments in “newly liberated areas” to identify opportunities to expand IMC WASH program into these areas and work with the Emergency Program Coordinator to develop concept notes/proposals for OFDA and other potential donors to address needs in current and newly liberated areas.
  • Provide on-the-job training to the IMC’s WASH team, community members and partner organizations on global WASH standards and approaches for WASH in emergencies (both hardware and software), including the use of water quality testing equipment and procedures (e.g. delaqua KIT, pool testers, etc.)
  • Work with the Emergency Program Coordinator in the recruitment, training and mentoring of a competent national WASH Manager.
  • Lead (alongside the WASH Manager the detailed assessment of all water points/health facilities to be rehabilitated and develop BoQs for the same facilities.
  • Work with support departments (logistics and finance) to assess available contractor’s suitability to work with IMC in the execution of WASH infrastructures (latrine construction, water point drilling, borehole rehabilitation, etc.),
  • Conduct technical evaluation for bidders on infrastructure work (latrines construction, water points drilling and borehole rehabilitation, health facilities rehabilitation etc.) and lead the supervision and follow up of contractors on all infrastructures under OFDA and any other projects.
  • Mobilize and train community volunteers to support WASH/hygiene promotion activities at community level and ensure quality hygiene promotion activities are conducted regularly in the beneficiary communities.
  • Provide training for the WASH Manager on relevant WASH in emergencies/hygiene promotion approaches and essential management skills while ensuring a progressive transition of responsibilities in close coordination with the Emergency Program Coordinator
  • Ensure timely production and submission of reports and provide technical information for WASH proposals development as needed.
  • Oversee/supervise WASH program implementation (for all donor funded projects).
  • Work with the Emergency Program Coordinator and the WASH Manager to prepare donor visits, accompany any visitors (including donors) to see and appreciate program activities progress and achievements on the ground
  • Ensure the Emergency Program Coordinator is fully updated on progress and any challenges in the WASH program.
Coordination:
  • Actively represent IMC in all WASH in Emergencies sector working groups at national and state level, and train the WASH Manager to progressively take on the coordination responsibilities.
  • Ensure IMC WASH interventions are coordinated with the relevant WASH stakeholders at the national and state level and make sure that IMC plays a leading role in the WASH in emergencies sector working group in Maiduguri/Borno
Representation:
  • Represent the organization together with the WASH Manager at relevant WASH forums
  • Contribute to the positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organization’s Code of Conduct
  • Compliance & Ethics:  Promote and encourage a culture of compliance and ethics throughout International Medical Corps. As applicable to the position, maintain a clear understanding of International Medical Corps’ and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards.  Conduct work with the highest level of integrity. Communicate these values to staff and to partners and requires them to adhere to these values.
  • Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse: Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps.
  • These duties and responsibilities are not comprehensive enough to describe all activities, other tasks may be assigned from time to time by the Emergency Program Coordinator (EPC), Program Director (PD), Country Director (CD) and Technical Unit (TU).
Qualifications Essential Skills and Experience:
  • At least 5 years' experience as a WASH sector lead with an international organization in emergency settings (international assignment)
  • B.Sc in Engineering, Masters preferred
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
  • Extremely flexible, and have the ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations
  • Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources
  • Team player and strong English communication skills, both oral and written
  • Proficient in computer applications, especially with MS Word and MS Excel, MS PowerPoint a plus.
  • Familiarity with key donors in humanitarian operations (OFDA, ECHO, FFP, BPRM, UN pooled funds, etc.)
  • Strong assessment and report /proposal writing skills
  • Strong program management skills and ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively
  • Strong coordination skills (familiar with UN/OCHA, UNICEF, ….and cluster system/sector working groups)
  • Capacity to interface with Finance and logistics on matters related to contractors selection, and also organizational and donor procedures compliance
  • Capacity to live and work a very insecure environment with limited amenities ( Maiduguri, Borno State, North East Nigeria)
