Youth Counselor Requirements, Skills & Qualifications

The following common skills and qualifications are required of a Youth Counselor:

  • A degree in Child Psychology or a similar field is preferable.
  • Experience with at-risk youth (either personally or professionally).
  • No prior criminal offenses.
  • The ability to offer good advice in difficult circumstances.
  • The ability to judge when appropriate authorities need to be contacted.
  • A passion for helping children to succeed.
  • A calm and reassuring demeanor.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
